About...
The Palais du Parlement de Bretagne (palace of the Parliament of Brittany) is a building erected in the 17th century in the centre of Rennes to house, as its name suggests, the Parliament of Brittany until its dissolution during the French Revolution.
Like all the other parliaments in the Kingdom of France, the Parlement de Bretagne was first and foremost a court of justice, but it also had a number of local legislative and administrative prerogatives, which led to some conflicts with the royal authorities.
The building's function as a court of justice continues today, as it is the seat of the Rennes Court of Appeal since 1804.
Architecturally, the palace bears witness to what is known as classical architecture. The original plans were drawn up by the architect Germain Gaultier, but the plans for the south facade were radically altered by Salomon de Brosse (architect of the Palais du Luxembourg in Paris). This probably explains the clear lack of symmetry between the building's southern and northern volumes.
In the 18th century, the grand staircase on the south façade was removed by Jacques Gabriel, the King's First Architect, and moved to the inner courtyard. This change was in keeping with the creation of a vast royal square in front of the palace.
The Palais du Parlement de Bretagne is listed in the Monuments Historiques (Historical French Heritage) since 1883.
